RALEIGH, N.C. — For Peggy Anne Harriss Vaughan, choosing a Liberty Senior Living community was not only a personal decision, but also a family tradition.

A resident of Hayes Barton Place in Raleigh, North Carolina, Peggy Anne is the fourth member of her immediate family to call a Liberty Senior Living community home. Her father lived at The Commons in Wilmington, as did her sister Beth. Her sister Virginia first chose Kempton of Wilmington and later moved to Bradley Creek, also in Wilmington.

For the Harriss family, the reasons for choosing Liberty communities are both practical and personal.

“Of course, location matters because we want to be close to our two children and their families and our friends,” said Peggy Anne. “But I also want to age with dignity, and I can do that right here at Hayes Barton Place because they offer assisted living, memory care and skilled nursing all on one campus.”

Peggy Anne and her husband, Roland, moved to Hayes Barton Place in 2025. Since then, they have embraced a lifestyle filled with social connection, lifelong learning, wellness opportunities and favorite hobbies.

Their daughter recently remarked on just how active they have become. “I feel like you’re in school,” she told them. “I come to see your art show, and now I’m cheering for you at the 12-community Liberty Games.”

Known affectionately as “Peeps” and “Boodie,” Peggy Anne and Roland stay busy with clubs, bridge, pickleball and a wide range of life enrichment programs. Roland, at 82, proudly claims the distinction of being the youngest player in his pickleball group.

One of their favorite activities is Bible study, led by Ernie Kasnek, a former New York City police officer and current Plant Operations Director, who guides a class of 27 enthusiastic participants.

Peggy Anne says her successful transition to senior living came down to four key principles:

First, bring a positive attitude. “If you embrace the community, it will embrace you,” she said.

Second, choose an active community where engagement and opportunities for involvement are available.

Third, commit to exercise. At Hayes Barton Place, the wellness team helps evaluate residents’ abilities and recommends classes that align with their goals and needs.

Fourth, maintain meaningful projects and personal passions. For Peggy Anne, that means continuing her lifelong love of painting, which gives her purpose and joy each day.

Peggy Anne’s roots in North Carolina are deep. She grew up in Wilmington and later lived in Edenton, where her husband served as mayor for 24 years. Today, the couple lives just minutes from their children and their families in Raleigh.

Their family connection to Hayes Barton Place is especially meaningful. Peggy Anne noted that her son and son-in-law helped name the streets surrounding the community in tribute to Sir Walter Raleigh, reflecting the history and spirit behind the Hayes Barton Place name. Now, their son-in-law is helping to build new cottages and townhomes. Peggy Anne and Roland can watch the progress from the comfort of their living room.

After settling into their new home and becoming deeply involved in community life, Peggy Anne said it best:

“Living here is truly a blessing.”
